Realistic Profit in Judgment Recovery, May 2014

Judgment recovery means collecting the money awarded to the victor in a civil court case. Unfortunately, statistics on judgment recovery per se are hard to come by. In 2002, a collection agent's net fees averaged about $112,000 a year -- a figure researched and published by Kaulkin Ginsberg, a Maryland-based accounts receivable management advisory firm.

The accounts-receivable industry had revenues of $17 billion in 2011, according to Kaulkin Ginsberg, a Rockville, Maryland-based consulting firm. In addition to collectors, the industry includes buyers, who purchase bad debt from creditors such as credit-card issuers. Debt collectors can be independent agents, employees of buyers or members of law firms.
