Preparing For Change

Now that healthcare reform is signed into law, the prevailing question is how this Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will impact business. It may be comforting to know that most of the changes are being phased in, so there is lead time to prepare.  In this issue, healthcare specialist Michael Klozotsky outlines the specific aspects of the law that are most likely to impact healthcare collections.

Sweeping reforms often result in unintended consequences.  Five years ago, bankruptcy reform was supposed to reduce the number of consumers who could wipe out their debts by filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.  But back in 2005, we didn’t see the recession coming, which has caused a dramatic rise in filings.  Read on, as Patrick Lunsford takes a look at the current state of bankruptcy reform.

Earlier this week, we announced first quarter results for mergers and acquisitions in the ARM industry ("Q1 M&A Activity in the ARM Industry – Financial Buyers Active Again"), and there are some encouraging signs. We are seeing increased interest, as the slowly-improving economy has triggered more companies to pursue company sales and acquisitions. For those of you preparing to grow through acquisition, Michael Lamm offers tips to plan for a smooth process during due diligence.

The Kaulkin Ginsberg team is available to help you prepare your business for change in whatever form that might take.  Feel free to contact me or any member of the advisory team for a confidential discussion of your interests.

Sincerely,

The Consumer Bankruptcy Landscape

It’s been close to five years since the passage of landmark bankruptcy reform. Coveted by most in the credit and collection industry, reform was supposed to solve some major issues in the American bankruptcy process. But economic factors have conspired to force filings ever upward, and cause the “new normal” to look strangely familiar.
